There’s a rich guy inside me…

by Nick on September 29, 2010

This morning I went to the gym again. (I find that if I don’t go before work, I don’t go at all – especially because I don’t have a set time to leave every day.) So I woke up super early again and went. I did “arms” and “abs.” Like I normally do, when I was working out my abs I was poking around my belly to see if any of my “abs” were poking through. They were not. But that’s not the point.

With my fingers on my belly I started pushing in lightly and noticed that I do have a six pack! There’s just about one knuckle’s worth of “chub” over them!
So I said to myself:

Self. There’s a shredded guy inside you! You just need to get rid of the chub surrounding him and let him free!

So that’s the plan (well, maybe not “shredded,” but whatever shows up once I drop the chub). It will take time and discipline. It may not be completely comfortable all the time. But if I have a plan and work hard, the shredded guy will eventually come out.

Of course that got me thinking about personal finance.  Maybe there is a rich guy inside me too!  So I kept thinking and, you know what?  There is.  It’s really the same principal.  I don’t borrow a ton of money.  I budget.  I save.  I invest.  I have a plan.  I work hard.  And, over time, the rich guy will come out!

That got me motivated – not “to be rich” because I don’t really care about that much.  I like not being financially dependent though.

I guess it’s more accurate to say that, over time, with hard work, planning and discipline, a “shredded, financially independent Nick” will come out.  I think I’ll like him.  I’m not sure if I will like that Nick better than the “knuckle-worth-of-chub-over-what-may-be-an-ab-or-two Nick whose balance sheet looks good, but definitely needs to keep working.”  But we’ll give it a try for a while.

There’s probably a little rich guy or gal inside you too!  And it only takes hard work, planning and discipline, over time, to let him or her free!

Here’s one great way to start setting them free:  You guessed it: Put your credit card down and slowly step away from the mall!
